Cattle Ranch in Brazil Becomes First to Achieve Rainforest Alliance Certification

A group of four ranches in Brazil recently became the first in the world to earn Rainforest Alliance certification for sustainable cattle production. The ranches, all belonging to the group Fazendas São Marcelo Ltda., met a rigorous set of standards that promote the humane treatment of livestock, the conservation of natural resources and the rights and well-being of workers. The standards were developed by the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) in response to the vast destruction of rainforest that results from cattle farming. IMAFLORA — the SAN representative in Brazil — carried out the certification.

New Certification Policy

The Sustainable Agriculture Network published on January 1st, 2013 the new Farm and Group Administrator Certification Policy.

This version of the Farm and Group Administrator Certification Policy will be in force for audit processes beginning April 1st, 2013, and it will be binding for agriculture and cattle production farms and group administrators that submit to audits based on the following SAN standard documents:

Sustainable Agriculture Standard and List of Prohibited Pesticides;
Group Certification Standard;
Standard for Sustainable Cattle Production Systems – only applies if the client requests inclusion of cattle production activities within the scope of the certificate.

Sustainable Farm Certification International, Ltda., a subsidiary of Rainforest Alliance, is the authorized Certification Body of the Sustainable Agriculture Network responsible for making certification decisions of farms and groups that comply with the requirements set forth in the Sustainable Agriculture Standards.

SFC contribuye al mantenimiento de las buenas prácticas sociales y ambientales sostenibles, mediante la certificación de fincas o grupos, en forma transparente, independiente y objetiva, apegado a los estándares de calidad definidos por las Normas de la RAS.

Sustainable Farm Certification, subsidiaria de Rainforest Alliance, es el Organismo de Certificación autorizado por la Red de Agricultura Sostenible (RAS) encargado de tomar las decisiones de certificación para las fincas o grupos que cumplan con los requisitos de las Normas de la Red de Agricultura Sostenible.
